I get very few blue haori in and this one is beautiful! Incredibly soft silk damask with the most delicate woven in filigree motifs. The silk lining is exquisite: vividly coloured fans with cherry blossoms and little hand-painted birds perched on the boughs. This haori dates from the 1940's and has the longer body length and deeper sleeves characteristic of that period - more of a coat length than a jacket length. There are many things that set this lovely black silk haori apart but the two most striking are that it is quite large. I've never had a haori with a chest measurement over 50" until now. The second feature is that it has three 'mon' (family crests) across the back, rather than the usual single mon. This shows that it was meant for very formal occasions and this is reflected in the quality of the silk: very heavy and very, very soft. It's lined with a soft synthetic fabric and it comes complete with two nicely woven 'himo' ties to close it. This haori is also just that little bit longer than normal. This one is a rarity and if you're that little bit larger and you've always wanted a haori, now is your chance!

This very soft silk haori dates from the late 1940's and has the longer body length and deeper sleeves characteristic of that period. The synthetic lining is lovely, with a vivid print of pine leaves in red against a cream background. The colour of the haori silk was very difficult to capture with the camera and it leans more toward the magenta than the blue. This haori is so beautifully soft, I find myself stroking it while it lays here on my lap! This is a silk 'juban', the kimono worn under the outer kimono. It has a lively design of white flowers against a red background and it's lined with red cotton in the body and matching silk in the sleeves. This is the softest of silk haori with a woven in design called 'asanoha'. The small white dots you see are formed with the 'shibori' technique, a form of tie-dye which the Japanese have elevated from a craft to an art. The colour is somewhere between plum and cranberry, very difficult to photograph but I think the photos are accurate. The lining is a beautiful synthetic damask with a woven in pattern of delicate leaves. This haori has never been worn and is in excellent condition.

I took this exquisite crepe silk kimono along to a talk I gave recently to a local group. I showed it to them as an example of fine Japanese design and dye-work. As you may be aware, rocks play a large part in traditional Japanese gardens and the correct placement of them is of the utmost importance. The rocks on this kimono are beautifully placed, beautifully coloured and embellished with embroidery in shimmering gold thread. The kimono is lined with cream silk in the upper body and white crepe in the skirt. As is often the case with these formal kimono, a faux collar has been hand-sewn around the lapels, which would be replaced when it became soiled. There are five small 'mon' (family crests) depicting paulownia leaves. In my mind, this is one of the loveliest kimono I've ever had the pleasure of owning and I hope that it goes to a good home where it will become a treasured heirloom as it deserves to be.

The design is of clouds and the royal cart, which is a popular motif in Japanese design. It's lined with a beautiful print silk, depicting colourful ships with flags waving and floral(!) sails. This is a meisen silk kimono, likely dating from the late 1950's or early 1960's. Since an exhibition of 20th century kimono at the Victoria and Albert Museum earlier this year, interest in Meisen silk has been growing and rightfully so as the designs are always colourful and interesting. This haori has a woven in chequerboard design overlaid with a design of stylised twigs and berries. It's lined with a cream synthetic fabric printed with a design of ginger jars. This haori has never been worn and is in excellent condition other than a few minor marks to the lining. You could wear this haori easily with smart jeans as well as with a pair of black linen trousers and a black silk shirt!

I find this silk haori really interesting because of the painterly look of the design, which is in fact hand-painted. The cream silk is quite heavy and has a very textured weave which gives the floral motifs an almost 'grainy' look and there are touches of gold on each flower (see closeup right). This damson coloured silk damask haori has a woven in design called 'asanoha' in Japan, a latticework of stylised flowers. This haori is finished with little 'shibori' dots at the centre of each flower. These little dots have been gathered and tied or sewn before the fabric was dyed, and then unbound, leaving an area of resist. The haori is lined with a cream synthetic fabric with a very pale print of clouds and flowers. There are some small marks to the back front sleeve and some very minor foxing to the lining. Although it is definitely wearable as it is, I have priced it accordingly. It comes complete with the woven 'himo' ties to close it.

This very soft crepe silk haori has a cream background with a design of stylised flowers that give it a pleasing block-print look. It is lined with cream synthetic damask fabric and is in excellent condition. It comes complete with woven 'himo' ties to close it. This is a very feminine haori that is perfect for spring and summer.

This is a very soft silk haori with a wonderful design of very stylised ferns or flowers, with little green buds here and there (see close-up right) The design is beautifully done and what you can't see even in the close-ups is the flourishes of gold here and there, giving the haori a quiet glamour. It's lined with a white synthetic fabric with a pale print of peonies. It comes complete with two white and silver woven 'himo' ties. Other than a couple of very faint marks on the lining, it is in excellent condition.

In Japan, this kimono would be worn for the most formal occasions, and everything about it is impressive, not least the beautiful design around the hem. Firstly, the palette is scrumptious and the design motifs are quintessentially Japanese. The dyework is beautifully done and various parts of the design have been embellished with embroidery in gold and silver threads (see close-ups right). The lining is a white synthetic fabric and an additional 'lapel' has been sewn in by hand (a common practice with more formal kimono) to achieve a contrast at the neck between crisp white and jet black. This has acquired one area of foxing but the lapel is easily removed. There is one tiny pin-hole in the black silk, on the left side front but it doesn't begin to detract and the kimono is in otherwise excellent condition. As a final treat, there are five little 'mon' (family crests) in the form of a beautiful butterfly!

This lovely coral coloured haori is unlined and is a lovely soft silk, with a liquid drape and the design woven in is of Japanese fans and flowers. At the nape of the neck is a 'mon' (family crest) beautifully embroidered in tiny stitches (you can just about see it in the closeup upper right). This is a particularly elegant and feminine haori and I must admit, it was one of those I was tempted to keep!

The threads used are metallic with a subtle sheen, making this an ideal evening jacket. This haori is in excellent condition with only some extremely minor foxing to the lining. A real beauty!

This is quite heavy cream silk haori with a pretty design of flowers floating in a stream in shades of blue, grey and plum. It's lined with a cream synthetic fabric which has acquired some foxing. The outer silk has the occasional very faint mark but the haori is perfectly wearable and none of this detracts however I have priced it accordingly. This would be ideal for a summer jacket!
