The silk kimono and fabric below are 'shibori' silk. Shibori is a method of tie-dye, practised by the Japanese to a very high level. The silk panels below are one example - the body of the cranes is worked in the shibori technique. See them in the Textile Treasures section. Shibori Silk 175 is a 'mokume' (wood-grain) shibori silk and a very fine example of that technique.
The Japanese use the shibori technique on silk and cotton and value the 'puckered' texture that it produces, which lends itself well to scarves as the warmth of silk (and cotton) is enhanced by the insulation properties of the 'puckers'.
