The Japanese use the word 'asa' to refer to either linen or hemp. I suspect this is linen has it has the weight and slightly crisper drape of linen. The background is a deep sage green, darker than it appears in the photos. The design of squares is achieved by a 'kasuri' (ikat) technique, whereby groups of warp and/or weft threads are gathered before being woven and tied at intervals. When they are dipped into the dye, the tied areas resist the dye. When they're untied and woven, you get the slightly 'fuzzy' edge to the motifs that is characteristic of ikat. This kimono likely dates to the 1940's or early 50's and it is in excellent condition. It is unlined but the collar and 'lapels' are reinforced with a pale pink silk gauze. Perfect for a summer dressing-gown.
